How Much Sod Do I Need? Understanding Square Footage and Measuring Your Yard

3 min read

If you’re considering new sod for your yard, one of the first questions you’ll probably have is: How much sod do I actually need? Sod is typically ordered based on the square footage of the area being covered, so having a good estimate of your yard’s size can help you better understand the scope of your project. While a professional sod installer can take accurate measurements and determine the final amount needed, knowing the basics can help you get started.

Why Square Footage Matters

Sod is generally sold by the square foot or by the pallet, with each pallet covering a certain amount of ground depending on the sod variety and supplier. That means the size of your yard directly affects how much sod will be needed for the project. A 2,000-square-foot lawn will naturally require much less sod than a 10,000-square-foot property, so measuring the installation area is an important first step when planning and budgeting.

How to Measure a Rectangular or Square Yard

For a simple rectangular area, measuring is fairly straightforward. Measure the length and width of the space in feet, then multiply the two numbers together.

For example: 50 feet long × 40 feet wide = 2,000 square feet

That means you would need enough sod to cover approximately 2,000 square feet.

What About Irregularly Shaped Yards?

Most yards are not perfect rectangles. You may have flower beds, patios, sidewalks, driveways, pools, landscaping, or other areas that do not need sod. One of the easiest ways to estimate an irregular yard is to divide it into several smaller sections.

Measure each section separately, calculate the square footage of each one, and then add the totals together. This can give you a much more useful estimate than trying to measure the entire property as one large shape.

Don't Forget to Subtract Areas That Won't Need Sod

If your measurements include areas covered by a driveway, patio, building, landscaping bed, or other permanent feature, those areas can usually be subtracted from your total. For example, if your overall space measures 5,000 square feet but a 500-square-foot patio sits within that area, your actual sod coverage may be closer to 4,500 square feet.

Why You Usually Need a Little Extra Sod

It is rarely a good idea to order the exact square footage down to the last piece. Sod often needs to be trimmed around landscaping, sidewalks, curves, trees, and property edges. Some pieces may also need to be cut to fit unusual areas. Because of this, a small amount of additional sod is often included when determining how much material is needed. The exact amount of extra material depends on the layout of the property and how much cutting will be required.

What About Slopes and Hills?

Properties with slopes can be a little more difficult to measure accurately. The actual surface area of a hill may be greater than what you would calculate from a simple overhead measurement. Slopes also require additional consideration during installation because sod needs good soil contact and may need extra attention while the roots establish. Having the property professionally measured can be especially helpful when hills or irregular terrain are involved.

Measuring Is Only Part of the Process

Knowing your square footage helps determine how much sod you need, but quantity is only one part of a successful installation.

Before sod is laid, the property may also need:

  • Old grass or vegetation removed

  • Soil preparation

  • Grading and leveling

  • Drainage corrections

  • Debris removal

  • Final preparation before installation

The condition of the property can affect the amount of preparation needed before the first piece of sod is installed.
